A selection of day hikes or multi-day hikes in the southern part of the Vercors massif, in a rich and varied setting for lovers of wide open spaces.
The Vercors massif reaches 2,341 metres at its highest point, making it a particularly rich and varied world, a "treasure island", in the author's own words. Overlooking Die and Valence, the southern Vercors is home to vast, particularly wild open spaces and the largest nature reserve in France. The plateaus of Glandasse, the Archiane cirque, Font d'Urle and Ambel each form their own world, criss-crossed with trails that allow for day hikes as well as multi-day crossings without seeing a single dwelling. They are surrounded by the largest cliffs in the Pre-Alps and border immense forests such as the Lente forest, so deep that the reintroduction of bears has been considered there. For now, hikers will encounter numerous ibex and griffon vultures reintroduced by the Park. The clarity of the air and the colours already hint at nearby Provence — with the added bonus of spectacular scenery.
