Ten years after a first book published by Glénat editions, François Laurens has tackled this new volume aimed at mountaineers wishing to climb the iconic summits of the Pyrenees.
Conditions evolve, practices too, and the selection of routes proposed today has been brought up to date. Of course, some classics remain, as they are very much part of the Pyrenean heritage. The new routes take into account the general level of climbers, which has increased, and they are often less far from the car parks and accessible within a day.
Few of them are fully equipped, and most of the lines allow you to also familiarise yourself with placing gear. These climbs, in addition to being pure moments of pleasure, are also fantastic training grounds before going to explore wilder routes in the high mountains. In the Pyrenees as elsewhere, climate change has also altered the practice.
For several years now, with sudden temperature variations, it is better to be ready to seize the right moment to embark on a snow or ice route, as optimal conditions never last very long.
Conversely, by taking advantage of the Spanish sierras or the south-facing slopes of the Ariège, you can climb on dry rock almost all year round.
As you will have gathered, you will find in these pages enough routes to first improve your mountaineering skills, before taking on some of the great classic routes of our beautiful Pyrenean range. All of this while of course keeping in mind the idea of enjoying the simple pleasure of being in the mountains.
