Past the threshold of the Périgord Blanc, two options present themselves to the hiker who has arrived in Bergerac and wishes to cross Aquitaine via the Vézelay route, following in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims.
The eastern route of the GR® 654 heads towards Montréal-du-Gers through the Agen country and the hillsides of Bas-Armagnac. The western route offers the hiker a more direct path to Santiago de Compostela: beyond Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, the GR® 654 crosses the Entre-Deux-Mers and the Bazadais before reaching the vast pine forests of the Landes. Béarn and then the Basque Country give way to Basse-Navarre, where the route joins the GR® 65 before ascending to tackle the Pyrenees, crossing the Col de Bentarte and reaching Roncevaux.
