This guide is the result of a collaboration between Grote Routepaden vzw and the non-profit organisation Sentiers de Grande Randonnée.
Together, the volunteers from both associations have selected 20 one-day hikes, 2 in each of the 10 provinces: West Flanders, East Flanders, Antwerp, Limburg, Flemish Brabant, Walloon Brabant, Hainaut, Namur, Liège, Luxembourg
These routes, partly traced along GR® or GR® de Pays trails, will lead hiking enthusiasts from Belgium and beyond to discover the unsuspected treasures of our country. You don't always need to travel far to be surprised! Hikers will be able to (re)discover impressive sites: The Cabourg dunes are the oldest dunes on the Belgian coast (up to 5,000 years old) and are protected as a European nature reserve; The Castle of the Counts: Gravensteen; The nature reserves of Kalkense Meersen and Landschap De Lierman; Neercanne Castle; The former Martinet colliery; The castles of Walzin and l'Oûrlaine; Natura 2000 site: Valley of the Hoëgne; …
Experienced hikers will find, in these original routes, plenty to enjoy for a pleasant day out. And even less seasoned walkers, or those who wish to discover the joys of hiking without overdoing it, will find — thanks to the many suggested shortcuts — opportunities to tailor their outing to their own aspirations.
The circular hikes proposed in this topo-guide have the special feature of connecting to one of the long-distance walking trails that criss-cross Belgium:
