Pierre Beghin - L'homme de tête

When he disappeared at the age of 41 on the south face of Annapurna, in the autumn of 1992, before the eyes of his young rope partner Lafaille, Pierre Beghin was the most prominent French Himalayan climber.

Yet the general public did not know him. Trained in the tough school of Fontainebleau and the Vercors, he quietly accumulated, throughout the 1970s, first ascents on the great alpine faces, often in winter, sometimes solo, from the Grandes Jorasses to the Ailefroide.

In the 1980s, having become an internationally recognized research engineer for his work on avalanches, he embarked on expedition after expedition.
He was then the champion of lightweight expeditions and alpine style, following in the footsteps of Messner.
