The stainless steel used in OPINEL blades is an optimized grade designed to ensure both high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical performance.
The blade offers an excellent cutting edge and high resistance to abrasion (wear), allowing it to withstand regular contact with hard materials, such as ceramic, before requiring resharpening.
Stainless steel has the advantage of requiring no special maintenance under ordinary conditions of use, unlike carbon steel. However, it may reach its limits when exposed to prolonged contact with aggressive environments (acids, salt water, cleaning agents, etc.).
Yatagan Blade:
The traditional Opinel blade is known as the Yatagan blade. Its shape is inspired by a Turkish sabre, with an upswept tip. The blade is ground to an exclusive convex profile that guarantees the blade's robustness and enables highly effective resharpening.
Handle:
Beech is the most commonly used wood for crafting Opinel handles. Sourced from French forests, it is hard, durable and easy to work with. With a uniform appearance, its light colour ranges from yellow to pinkish. It is recognizable by the presence of numerous small dark streaks. The handle is varnished for enhanced protection against moisture and dirt.
