Opinel carbon steel is an unalloyed, high carbon steel that achieves, after heat treatment, an excellent hardness which guarantees perfect edge retention as well as great wear resistance and easy resharpening.
However, as carbon steel has low resistance to corrosion from moisture, it requires precautions when in use: do not leave your knife in a damp environment, particularly in a dishwasher, wipe the blade with an oily cloth after use and grease it frequently along with its pivot.
Despite these precautions, signs of corrosion may appear.
Beech is the most commonly used wood for making Opinel handles. Sourced from French forests, it is hard, durable and easy to work with.
With a uniform appearance, its light colour ranges from yellow to pinkish. It is recognisable by the presence of numerous small dark streaks.
The handle is varnished to provide better protection against moisture and dirt.
