Ibiza retains the label of hippie island, as it was the convergence point of this movement in Spain in the 70s. Even today, it has the image of an earthly paradise, blended with nightlife and great parties until dawn. An image that prevails during the summer months, its high season, and which changes radically for the rest of the year, coinciding with the best period for climbing.
Climbing arrived on the island in 1989, at what is considered the mother site: Buda.
Since then, the landscape has changed greatly: climbing sites have become established and new ones have been created in a constant search for better routes. The result is visible in this guide, which lists twelve sport climbing sites spread across the island.
Nearly 400 bolted routes for all types of terrain, ranging from pure grey limestone slabs to whitish, pocketed faces, passing through overhanging and airy roofs, routes of varied lengths, short and technical, and a wide range of grades suited to all levels.
The geography of Ibiza, low in altitude and without ravines, is limited to cliff climbing. Most of its sites are therefore found in the isolated coves of the north, which offer the finest scenery, absolute tranquility and fascinating wildlife.
Buda is the only site in the south, where the cliffs rise high enough to offer a very varied and extensive wall. At the northern sites, you will find the wildest side of the island and the last remaining bastions untouched by tourism.
The aim of this guide, produced in close collaboration with local climbers from Ibiza, is to showcase the sport climbing found on these cliffs, many of which are little known. All will be protected with the creation of a future nature park, so the example that must come from your visit is one of utmost respect for this heritage. Enjoy it and take care of it.
