During your 221 km journey around the Limburg Campine, you rarely cross paths with a living soul throughout the day. You travel almost constantly through meadows, forests and wild heathlands. Discover the Campine nature in all its facets. The number of unpaved roads on this GR trail is particularly significant.
The GR 561 Kempen-Maaspad is one of the greenest long-distance hiking trails in Flanders, the route being a succession of nature reserves. You walk alongside canals, richly vegetated riverbanks, river valleys and water mills. The route crosses the border as well as the dark Campine forests and the remnants of the mining past. The ascent to the Campine plateau rewards you with almost endless views. And finally you descend towards Maastricht, the most "Belgian" of all Dutch cities.
The guide is composed of 4 parts. At the beginning of each part, you will find a table with distances and suggestions for daily stages. But you can just as easily plan your own stages using the maps and tables. On each map, you will find the distance between reference points on that map. You can also see where public transport, shops, restaurants and possible accommodation are located near the route. You will also receive a precise description of the route, supplemented by general information about the sites, nature and landscape.
